We strive to create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued and has the opportunity to participate and succeed. Any concerns regarding discrimination should be reported to the school administration immediately.
-
To ensure the health and safety of all participants, a current physical examination is required for every student intending to participate in any Belgrade High School athletic or extracurricular activity.
-
Validity: The physical examination must be dated on or after May 1st, 2025, to be valid for the entire 2026-2027 school year. Physicals conducted before this date will not be accepted. A physical is valid for two academic school years (e.g., physical needed freshman and junior years).
-
Form: Physicals must be completed on the official Montana High School Association (MHSA) Physical Examination Form, which can be downloaded from the Belgrade High School Activities website or obtained from the Activities Office.

-
Academic success is paramount at Belgrade High School. Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege that requires students to maintain satisfactory academic standing. Belgrade High School adheres to the academic eligibility standards set by the Montana High School Association (MHSA) and may implement additional local standards.
-
MHSA Standards:
-
Students must be enrolled in and regularly attending at least 20 credit hours (or 4 full courses) per semester.
-
Students must maintain a passing grade in all enrolled courses. Any student failing one or more courses at the time of eligibility checks will be deemed ineligible.
-
Eligibility is determined weekly/bi-weekly based on current grades.
-
Belgrade High School Standards:
-
In addition to MHSA requirements, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. Students falling below a 2.0 GPA may be placed on academic probation.
-
Academic Probation: Students on academic probation may still participate but will be required to attend mandatory study halls, academic support sessions, or meet regularly with teachers until their grades improve to an eligible level. Specific terms of probation will be communicated by the Activities Director and/or school administration.
-
Attendance: Students are required to attend all classes to be considered eligible for practice and/or contests. Absences must be excused prior to the student participating in the practice or contest.
-
Ineligibility Consequences:
-
Students who are ineligible will not be allowed to compete, perform, or travel with their team/group during the period of ineligibility.
-
Students may still be required to attend practices or meetings at the discretion of the coach/advisor, provided it does not interfere with academic remediation.
-
Ineligibility due to grades must be resolved before a student can return to full participation.
-
Monitoring: Academic eligibility will be regularly monitored by the Activities Office and school administration. Coaches and advisors will be notified of any student’s ineligibility status.
-
Communication: Students and parents are encouraged to regularly communicate with teachers, coaches, and school counselors regarding academic progress and any concerns about eligibility.
-
-
We value strong partnerships with our families and encourage open, respectful communication. Most questions or concerns can be resolved quickly by speaking with a staff member who is closest to the situation. This process allows concerns to be addressed promptly and effectively while maintaining positive relationships among students, families, coaches, and school staff.
-
Step 1: Contact the coach. Please allow 24 hours after a contest before contacting a coach about concerns. This gives everyone an opportunity to reflect before discussing the situation. Some examples are:
-
Questions about playing time
-
Team expectations or rules
-
Practice schedules
-
Position assignments
-
Individual performance
-
Game strategy
-
Step 2: Contact the Activities Director. If your concern has not been resolved after speaking with the coach, or if your concern involves the overall athletic program, please contact the Activities Director. Some examples are:
-
Program operations
-
Eligibility concerns
-
Student safety
-
Sportsmanship concerns
-
Scheduling issues
-
Concerns that remain unresolved after meeting with the coach
-
Step 3: Contact the School Principal. If your concern remains unresolved after working with the Activities Director, you may contact the Principal.
-
Step 4: Contact Assistant Superintendent. District Administration becomes involved only after the previous steps have been completed, unless the concern involves student safety, discrimination, harassment, or another issue requiring immediate attention.
When to Skip the Process: If your concern involves student safety, suspected abuse, discrimination, harassment, hazing, retaliation, or a potential violation of law or District Policy, please contact the Activities Director immediately.
-
-

-
Belgrade High School maintains a strict policy against bullying, harassment, and hazing. Such behaviors undermine the positive and supportive environment we strive to create and are detrimental to our students' well-being. This policy applies to all school-sponsored activities, on and off school grounds, and extends to electronic communications (cyberbullying).
-
Bullying: Defined as any unwanted, aggressive behavior by another youth or group of youths that involves a real or perceived power imbalance and is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time. Bullying can be physical, verbal, social/relational, or cyberbullying.
-
Harassment: Defined as unwelcome conduct based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity. Harassment becomes unlawful where it is severe or pervasive enough to create a hostile environment.
-
Hazing: Defined as any act that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or that willfully destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation or admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in, any group or organization.

All students are expected to treat others with respect and dignity.
-
Participants in activities are leaders and role models and are expected to foster inclusive and welcoming environments.
-
Students are encouraged to report any instances of bullying, harassment, or hazing to a coach, advisor, teacher, counselor, or school administrator.
Consequences: Any student found to be engaging in bullying, harassment, or hazing will face disciplinary action, which may include:
-
Suspension from participation in activities.
-
Suspension from school.
-
Referral to law enforcement, if applicable.
-
Other consequences as determined by school administration, in accordance with Belgrade School District policies.
-
-
Belgrade High School places the highest priority on the health and safety of our student-athletes, especially concerning head injuries. We strictly adhere to Montana High School Association (MHSA) and state law requirements regarding concussion management.
-
Annual Education: All student participants and their parents/guardians are required to complete annual concussion education. This involves reviewing materials provided by the school and acknowledging understanding through the Dragonfly registration platform.
-
"When in Doubt, Sit Them Out": Any student-athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion, regardless of the severity of the symptoms, must be immediately removed from practice or competition. They should not return to play on the same day.
-
Medical Evaluation Required: A student-athlete diagnosed with a concussion must be evaluated by a medical professional (MD, DO, PA, or NP) trained in concussion management.
-
Return to Play (RTP) Protocol: A student-athlete diagnosed with a concussion is prohibited from returning to any practice or competition until they have:
-
Been evaluated and cleared by a medical professional (MD, DO, PA, or NP).
-
Completed a supervised, graduated "Return to Play" protocol as outlined by the medical professional and MHSA guidelines.
-
Received written clearance from the treating medical professional to return to full participation. This written clearance must be submitted to the Activities Office.
-
Academic Accommodations: Students recovering from a concussion may also require academic accommodations. Parents should communicate with school counselors and teachers regarding a student's symptoms and needs.
-
Second Impact Syndrome: Emphasized risks associated with returning to play too soon after a concussion, which can lead to severe, potentially life-threatening brain injury.
-
-
Parents/Guardians are responsible for providing medical insurance coverage for their student participants. Belgrade School District does not provide primary medical insurance for student-athletes or activity participants.
-
Primary Insurance: It is mandatory that all participants have adequate primary medical insurance coverage. This information must be provided during the Dragonfly registration process.
-
Secondary Insurance: The school district may carry secondary or catastrophic insurance that provides limited coverage after a family's primary insurance has paid its benefits and only for injuries sustained during supervised, school-sponsored activities. This secondary coverage has limitations and deductibles.
-
Reporting Injuries:
-
Immediate Notification: Any injury, no matter how minor, sustained during practice, competition, or activity, must be immediately reported to the coach/advisor.
-
Parent/Guardian Notification: The coach/advisor will ensure that parents/guardians are notified of the injury.
-
Accident Report: A school accident report form must be completed for any injury requiring medical attention or resulting in missed time from activity. These forms are available through the Activities Office.
-
Medical Attention: If an injury requires medical attention beyond basic first aid, parents/guardians are responsible for seeking prompt medical care for their child.
-
Return to Play After Injury: For any injury requiring a visit to a medical professional, the student must provide written clearance from the attending physician (MD, DO, PA, or NP) to the Coach/Athletic Trainer before being allowed to return to practice or competition.
-
-
During the Dragonfly registration process, parents/guardians will be required to provide essential medical release information to ensure appropriate care can be administered in case of an emergency.
-
Emergency Contact Information: Accurate and up-to-date emergency contact numbers for parents/guardians and alternative contacts are critical.
-
Medical History: Disclosure of any pre-existing medical conditions, allergies (food, medication, insect stings), chronic illnesses (e.g., asthma, diabetes, epilepsy), or recent injuries/surgeries is essential for staff to provide appropriate care.
-
Medication Information: A list of all current medications, dosages, and administration instructions must be provided. (See Medication Policy below).
-
Consent for Treatment: Parents/guardians will sign a consent form authorizing coaches, athletic trainers (if available), and other designated school personnel to obtain emergency medical treatment for their child in situations where parents/guardians cannot be reached. This consent also covers emergency transport to a medical facility.
-
HIPAA: While we strive for confidentiality, parents/guardians should understand that by signing the medical release, they authorize school personnel (coaches, administrators, school nurse) to share relevant medical information with medical professionals in an emergency and with each other to ensure the safety and well-being of the student.
-
-
Belgrade High School follows specific procedures for medication administration during school-sponsored activities to ensure student safety and compliance with state regulations.
-
Self-Administration (Over-the-Counter): Students are generally permitted to carry and self-administer over-the-counter medications (e.g., pain relievers, antacids) provided they are in their original packaging, are used as directed, and the parent has provided consent on Dragonfly.
-
Prescription Medication (Self-Carry): Students who require prescription medication (e.g., inhalers for asthma, EpiPens for severe allergies) and are capable of self-administering may carry and use these medications. A copy of the prescription and parent/guardian consent must be on file via Dragonfly. School personnel should be aware of the medication and its location.
-
Medication Administered by Staff: If a student requires school staff (coach/advisor) to administer prescription medication, a specific "Authorization for Administration of Medication" form must be completed by the prescribing physician and the parent/guardian. Medications must be provided to the coach/advisor in their original, labeled prescription container.
-
Controlled Substances: Prescription controlled substances (e.g., certain ADHD medications, strong pain relievers) require strict adherence to school district policies regarding storage and administration. Generally, these should be kept in the Activities Office or with a designated staff member if administered by staff.
-
Communication: Parents/guardians must communicate any changes in medication or health status to the nurse’s office immediately.
-
-
Student safety and responsible conduct are paramount during all school-sponsored travel. All participants are expected to adhere to the following rules when traveling for activities.
-
School-Provided Transportation: Students are required to travel to and from all away contests and events in school-provided transportation (school bus, approved vans/cars driven by school personnel) with their team/group and coach/advisor.
-
Exceptions for Travel: A student may be released from school-provided transportation only under the following conditions:
-
The student's parent/guardian is physically present at the event and signs in/out the student with the coach/advisor.
-
The student is traveling with their own parent/guardian. Students are not permitted to leave with another student's parent/guardian, even with a note, unless prior written approval has been granted by the Activities Director (see below).
-
Emergency Situations: In rare emergency situations where a student must leave with another adult, prior written permission must be submitted to and approved by the Activities Director at least 24 hours in advance of the event. This written request must include the reason for the request, the name of the designated adult, and contact information for verification.
-
Behavior on Transportation: All school rules and the Participant Code of Conduct apply while on school transportation. Students are expected to maintain respectful behavior, keep the vehicle clean, and follow the instructions of the driver and supervising staff.
-
Personal Vehicles: Students are generally not permitted to drive personal vehicles to or from away contests or events without explicit, prior approval from the Activities Director for very specific circumstances.
-
Appropriate Attire: Participants are expected to wear appropriate attire reflective of representing Belgrade High School during travel.
-
-
Participants in Belgrade High School activities are expected to present themselves in a manner that reflects positively on themselves, their team/group, and the school. While specific team/group uniforms and dress codes will be outlined by individual coaches/advisors, general standards apply.
-
Neat and Clean: All participants should maintain good personal hygiene and wear clean, appropriate attire.
-
Modesty: Clothing should be modest and not revealing or distracting.
-
School-Appropriate: Clothing, accessories, and grooming should be consistent with general school dress code policies. Items depicting illegal substances, inappropriate language, violence, or discrimination are prohibited.
-
Team/Group Specific: Adhere to all dress and grooming requirements set by your coach or advisor, especially for travel, performances, or competitions. This may include specific uniforms, footwear, or hair guidelines.
-
Safety: For certain activities, specific dress and grooming standards are required for safety reasons (e.g., hair tied back, no loose jewelry). These must be strictly followed.
-
-
Belgrade High School strives to maximize student participation in activities while also fostering competitive teams and groups. The decision to "cut" (not select) participants is a difficult one, but sometimes necessary due to safety, facility limitations, or the nature of the activity.
-
Non-Cut Activities: Many activities at Belgrade High School are designed to be inclusive and do not have a "cut" policy. These typically include clubs, some academic teams, and certain entry-level sports.

-
Skill Level & Ability: Demonstrated proficiency in the sport/activity.

-
Dismissal: Participants may be removed from programs if rules of program conduct and team standards are not be followed.
-
Appeals: Decisions regarding team selection are typically final and not subject to appeal, as they are based on the professional judgment of the coaching staff. However, concerns about fairness or process may be addressed with the Activities Director.
-

Student-Athlete & Parent/Legal Guardian Concussion Statement
Because of the passage of the Dylan Steiger’s Protection of Youth Athletes Act, schools are required to distribute information sheets for the purpose of informing and educating student-athletes and their parents of the nature and risk of concussion and head injury to student athletes, including the risks of continuing to play after concussion or head injury. Montana law requires that each year, before beginning practice for an organized activity, a student-athlete and the student-athlete’s parent(s)/legal guardian(s) must be given an information sheet, and both parties must sign and return a form acknowledging receipt of the information to an official designated by the school or school district prior to the student-athletes participation during the designated school year. The law further states that a student-athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from play at the time of injury and may not return to play until the student-athlete has received a written clearance from a licensed healthcare provider.
Student-Athlete Name:
This form must be completed for each student-athlete, even if there are multiple student-athletes in each household.
Parent/Legal Guardian Name(s):
We have read the Student-Athlete & Parent/Legal Guardian Concussion Information Sheet.
If true, please check box
After reading the information sheet, I am aware of the following information:
Student/Athlete Initials Parent/Legal Guardian Initials A concussion is a brain injury, which should be reported to my parents, my coach(es), or a medical professional if one is available. A concussion can affect the ability to perform everyday activities such as the ability to think, balance, and classroom performance. A concussion cannot be “seen.” Some symptoms might be present right away. Other symptoms can show up hours or days after an injury. I will tell my parents, my coach, and/or a medical professional about my injuries and illnesses. N/A If I think a teammate has a concussion, I should tell my coach(es), parents, or licensed health-care professional about the concussion. N/A I will not return to play in a game or practice if a hit to my head or body causes any concussion-related symptoms. N/A I/my child will need written permission from a licensed healthcare professional to return to play or practice after a concussion. After a concussion, the brain needs time to heal. I understand that I am/my child is much more likely to have another concussion or more serious brain injury if return to play or practice occurs before concussion symptoms go away. Sometimes, repeat concussions can cause serious and long-lasting problems. I have read the concussion symptoms on the Concussion fact sheet. -
